Rivers

Matamuhuri:

Matamuhuri river flowing in a spiraling motion across the chest of this upazila. Just as the Nile is a gift from Egypt, so are the three upazilas of Lama, Alikadam and Chakaria. There is also a history of naming the Matamuhuri river. There is a rumor that this river is not a single source of water. The river is formed by dripping water from the mouths of so many mother-like mountains. That is why its name is Matamuhuri. The present name has been changed to Matamahuri due to later spelling errors. The word muhuri means water jhajar with innumerable holes, which means shower in English. On the other hand, the current spelling is Mahuri, which means Writer. So Matamuhuri spelling is meaningful and reasonable.

The Lama and Yangtze canals are the main rivers.
