Name

The name Lama originates from Ahlama Boa (neighborhood). There is disagreement over the naming of the lama in the Matamuhuri river delta. According to some, the word lama means lower or lower area. This is the regional word of Chittagong. The name of this region is Lama as it is located in the lower reaches of the river Matamuhuri in the hilly region. According to the legend of the tribes, at present there was a noble Ramama tribe called Ahlama (meaning Parama Sundari) living in Lamamukh area. At that time Ahlama was named Roya or Para because of its financial prosperity and influence. Later Lama Khal, Lama Bazar, Mouza etc. were named after him. Just as Cox's Bazar was named after Captain Hiram Cox, so was Lama later named after a person named Ahlama, a corruption of Bengali pronunciation and spelling. Elderly non-tribal elders of all tribes residing in the Lama find the latter view acceptable.
